Whatever your intentions may be on twitter – whether it be for social aims or professional ones – having a great bio is vital to your success. The way you bio reads will have a determining effect on how others perceive you. So it had better be good!
There are several things that you will have to factor in when you sit down to write your bio. I have complied below the most important of these factors to help you get started.
Character space is limited so make it count!
Remember, you will only get 160 characters to work with so it is vitally important that you use this limited space to its fullest. Be to the point!
Keep in mind what you include in your bio!
When people google your name, or use any other search engine to do likewise, your twitter bio will be in amongst the top results so make sure that everything is the way you want it to be. Especially spelling!
Do not fall for the predictability trap!
By this I mean do not be boring and average! There are so many twitter bios online that are identical and thus forgettable – this is not what you want yours to be described as. What do I mean by predictable? Well, telling the world that you love animals, or that you are a Pisces, or that your favourite colour is blue; this is all predictable and boring and so very bad for a twitter bio! These kinds of bios are so predictable that there is even a piece of software that can generate these generic bios for you.
Failure to stand out may result in fakeness!
It was reported not too long ago that between 5 to 10 % of twitter users are actually computer programs, i.e. as fake as can be. What leads to other twitter users seeing you as being fake is having no profile picture or else a terribly dull profile bio. You have been warned!
Be careful about the humour!
Just because you think that the 160 characters that you have just spent the last two hours creating is hilarious, might not actually mean that it is! Ask friends and family for their opinion and see if they get a giggle out of what you have written.
We are not all creative geniuses!
Just because you cannot come up with a 160 piece of art, does not mean that you are boring. Lots of people have this problem; it is not a simple thing trying to get your personality across in such few character. So, take your time and ask advice. Even look at some bios that you have seen and liked and use them as a template.
Self promoting is the key!
Shelf those feelings of arrogance, narcissism and selfishness and get out there and sell yourself! You want the world to see the real you so go and give it to them!
